Series: Counterfeiters Go Away

Article 3: What can you do? (Final Article in this series)

As resellers, distributors and manufacturer's, we need to ask ourselves "What can we do to protect ourselves from counterfeiters?"

First and foremost, everyone needs to stop "taking the shot" when they know that a part isn't being sold for a fair market price. Whether you are a broker, reseller or manufacturer, you must understand that if a company is selling you parts and they have been in the business and performing business in the right way for a long time, they aren't going to sell you an obsolete part for $2.00 that sold for $12.00 when it was being made. If you have a part on a 40 week lead time, you shouldn't be getting a 50% discount on parts. If you are getting severely discounted prices, you need to do your homework and ask yourself why. If the market has the parts readily available, the franchised distributors or factory has the parts in stock and your getting excess inventory from a large EMS provider, you may get that big cost savings and on occasion get that big deal that you save 50%. However, if your going to take a shot without checking the market thoroughly, in the long run, you will loose money on either shipping, testing, re-work charges or even worse, lawsuits. If your using a company to help you with some cost savings, make sure they are doing their homework before giving them the orders and we would recommend using companies that have been around for a long time and have some sort of a track record before trying a new companies services. There is so much money that new counterfeiters open up every day in all regions of the world so make sure that you do your homework and set specific goals for your companies you are doing business with, this will reduce the amount of time and money spent in the long run.

Stayed tuned for more!!
